+ Disaster Management
One of the main objectives of Red Cross is to protect life and provide immediate relief to the extent possible to the victims of natural calamities such as floods, cyclones, epidemics, famine, drought, earthquakes, fire accidents etc.,. For immediate disaster preparedness and response, efforts are being made to train the people from local community, as they will be in a better position to save lives and provide immediate relief as early as possible. These activities are carried out in the disaster prone areas with the help and assistance of I.R.C.S. National Headquarters, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and other National Partner Societies viz., American Red Cross, Canadian Red Cross, Hong Kong Red Cross and Spanish Red Cross.

Disaster Management is a collective term encompassing all aspects of planning and responding to disasters including both pre and post disaster activities.

Disaster Management Department has established State Disaster Response Team (SDRT) in Headquarters of State Branch. SDRT consists of Red Cross members who are trained and specialized in different sectors of emergency response and deployed under a team leader for the coordination and operation management on the site.

+ Blood Banks
The Indian Red Cross Society, A.P. State Branch is playing a key role in voluntary blood donation movement. It is the largest procurer of blood in the state with thirty six (36) blood banks and seventy one (71) Blood storage centers working under its control. The Red Cross has developed 8 centers from among the Blood Banks for the purpose of Blood Components Separation for specific requirements. During the year 2009-10, 1626 Blood donation camps were conducted and 1,44,146 units of Blood have been collected.

The following 23 blood banks have been established under the auspices of Indian Red Cross Society, Andhra Pradesh State Branch in the districts.

Blood Transfusion Centre for Thalassemic children

As part of expansion of its activities, the Red Cross Blood Transfusion Centre for Thalassemic children has been established in the year 2007 in the premises of Red Cross Blood Bank, Vidyanagar, Hyderabad. The centre provides help to about 1000 children per month suffering from Thalassemia, with free blood transfusion and supply of medicines at subsidized rates.

+ Medicine Banks
The concept of the Medicine banks has been evolved with the object of providing medicines free of cost to poor & needy people to the extent possible, supplementing the services by the Government in providing free medicines. In furtherance to this objective, seven (7) Medicine Banks have been opened so far at the following places in the state and they are functioning satisfactorily.
  • Red Cross Dr. Paul Dass Hospital, Secunderabad
  • Red Cross Medicine Bank, King Koti Hospital, Hyderabad.
  • Red Cross Medicine Bank, Bapatla
  • Red Cross Medicine Bank, Mahabubnagar
  • Red Cross Medicine Bank, Srikakulam
  • Red Cross Medicine Bank, Vzianagaram
  • Red Cross Medicine Bank, Vijayawada
The IRCS intends to set up as many Medicine banks as possible in each district. For successful functioning of the Medicine Banks, the IRCS is making efforts to collect medicines and/or cash by appealing to Pharmaceutical companies, Chemists and Druggists Associations, Doctors and Philanthropists.

+ Medical Camps
A.P Red Cross regularly conducts Medical Camps in slums with the help of senior doctors like Children specialists, Dentists, Gynecologists and General Physicians who volunteer to give free service. Medicines are also distributed free of charge

+ Orphanages / Rehabilitation Homes

A.P. Red Cross is running the following Orphanages / Rehabilitation Homes:

  • Red Cross Rehabilitation Home for Girls, Gaddiannaram, Hyderabad
  • Red Cross Rehabilitation Home for Boys, Guntur District
  • Red Cross Orphanage for Boys, Karimnagar
  • Red Cross Orphanage for Boys/Girls in Mahabubnagar District
The inmates of the above homes are provided free boarding and lodging, clothes and education up to 10th class.

+ Home Nursing Services
This facility is provided to those who are in need of Home Nursing assistance at residences. Girls with minimum educational qualification of 10th class are given training for a period of 3 months by IRCS and GMR foundation in collaboration with Andhra Bank and also Bankers Institute at Rajendra nagar, Ranga Reddy District. At present about 200 Home Nurses are working under the auspices of IRCS and their services are appreciated by our clientele.


+ Schools
The Indian Red Cross Society is running the following schools in Andhra Pradesh:

The Red Cross Govt. Girls High School, Masab Tank, Hyderabad.

Red Cross Residential Boys School for Orthopedically handicapped in East Godavari District.

In Nalgonda, Nellore and Nizamabad Districts the Govt. Schools are adopted by concerned IRCS District branches to provide basic amenities.

+ Sewing Centres
Under Red Cross Women Empowerment Program girls are trained in sewing, embroidery, apparel design, knitting, cutting and crochet at the following centers.
  • Bansilalpet, Secunderabad
  • Masab Tank, Hyderabad
  • Gaddiannaram, Hyderabad
  • Adilabad, Adilabad District
  • Kakinada, East Godavari District
  • Tuni, East Godavari District
  • Nandyal, Kurnool District
  • Kadapa, Kadapa District
  • Machilipatnam, Krishna District.

+ Vocational Training Institute
The children of Late Sri T. Chandrashekar Reddy have donated to the Red Cross a building in his memory along with furniture and certain essential equipment like Computers etc. in the year 2008 for establishing Vocational Training Institute, at Masab Tank, Hyderabad.

The Vocational Training Institute has entered into an MOU with Employment Generation and Marketing Mission (EGMM), Department of Rural Development, Government of Andhra Pradesh on 23rd April 2009 for starting vocational courses in different disciplines for unemployed rural youth below poverty line (BPL) and for their Placement for gainful employment. The details of the training programme are as follows.

+ Balwadis
A.P. Red Cross is running Balwadi at Masab Tank, Hyderabad for 90 children from near by slum areas. They are provided with free education, midday meals, nutrition supplements and medial care. They are also provided with uniforms, books, shoes and school bags. Three paid teachers and some voluntary teachers look after the children. One more Balwadi is being run at Nandimalam, Kadapa.

+ Yoga and Naturopathy Centre
Institute of Yoga and Nature Cure, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad is established in the year 1994. The Institute has two fully equipped treatment units, one for men and one for women. Independent rooms are available to accommodate 30 inpatients. Three doctors and other supporting staff are working in the Institute which has become very popular in a short span of time. Yoga classes are held in shifts every day in the morning and evening.

Red Cross Yoga Prakruthi Health Kendra

Dr C. Saraswathy Rao, Hony. Vice President, IRCS and Director, Red Cross Yoga Prakruthi Kendra, Vidyanagar was looking after the Red Cross Yoga Prakruthi Kendra from 27.5.2001. After the sad demise of Dr. Saraswathy Rao, it is being run as Yoga Centre with Yoga Instructors.


+ Urban Health Centers
Urban Health Centres are providing Maternity Services, Prenatal & Antenatal care, normal deliveries, and child welfare services including immunization programmes. Motivation services for family welfare including sterilization / vasectomy operations are carried out. All the centres are involved in Pulse Polio Programmes and are covering total target areas.

+ Mobile Medical Units:
In five districts viz. Mahabubnagar, Medak, Ranga Reddy, Nalgonda and Warangal districts, mobile medical units are functioning to cater to the medical needs of the poor people in the interior and remote areas.

+ Senior Citizen Resort (Phone No:08431-3252200)
The AP Red Cross had been allotted 22 acres of land at Nazeebnagar, Ranga Reddy District for development of Senior Citizens Resort. There are 9 cottages already constructed and another 91 cottages are proposed to be added in the coming years. To improve the facilities at the resort a separate building has been constructed with the provision of Kitchen, Dining hall, Prayer hall and Reading room.

+ Tracing Activities

A.P. Red Cross in co-ordination with National Headquarters and International Committee of Red Cross facilitates tracing of those who were separated from their families during floods and other calamities.
